The Enchanting profession is fun because it is one part sorcerer and one part chemist. One advantage to it is that you can be anywhere when you do it, unlike Blacksmithing which requires a forge.

There are two sides to this profession:

• Enchanting which means giving special properties to items such as weapons and armor.
  
  
• Disenchanting which is the opposite: breaking down an object into magical elements (or reagents).

The Enchanting profession is also a good way to make gold by acquiring an item, disenchanting it, and selling the reagents on the Auction House.

Enchanting

Having an enchanter in a guild is very helpful because your guild members will give you things to enchant. It isn’t just other player’s items you can enchant; you can also enchant things for your own personal use. Only certain items can be enchanted.

In order to enchant an item, you need:
Reagents
A runed rod.

Most reagents are those that are extracted from an object by disenchanting it, but not all. Some reagents are things you’ll find elsewhere.

You’ll notice that some of the reagents are ‘greater’ and ‘lesser’ elements, such as Lesser Magical Essence and Greater Magical Essence. Right-clicking on any 3 lessers will change them into 1 greater, and vice versa.

You’ll need a different runed rod depending on the level of the enchant you want to do. A runed copper rod is the lowest rod needed for enchantments. Later at highest levels, you’ll need a runed titanium rod.

But don’t worry, you don’t need to carry all these runed rods around with you. A higher level rod will also function for the lower rods. For example, a titanium runed rod can be used for all the enchants that need lower rods (copper, silver, golden, etc.)

Where do you get these runed rods? You make them yourself by enchanting a regular rod which you can get from a blacksmith (except for a copper rod which is sold by a vendor). You can also buy them on the AH.

You need a certain skill level to create the runed rods. You have to be at least skill 100 to enchant a runed silver rod, for instance.

Here’s a tip: you can enchant the same object over and over to increase your skill level. Just answer yes when it prompts you to replace the current enchant.

Disenchanting

Once you disenchant an item, that item is destroyed, so make sure it isn’t something you need.

You can often get people to give you items they no longer need so that you can disenchant them. Keep in mind that only green items or better can be disenchanted.

What kinds of reagents can you get from disenchanting? That depends on the item and level. In general, dust comes from armor, essence comes from weapons, shards come from blue items, and crystals come from purple items. There are exceptions to this rule, but this is generally true.

The level of the item you can disenchant depends on your skill level. For example, for Dream Dust you need to be at least at skill level 140.

Tip for Getting Cheap Reagents: Become a Tailor

The Tailor profession goes really well with Enchanting because you can often get enchanting reagents cheaply by disenchanting things you’ve made as a tailor.

For example, Strange Dust bought at the Auction House would generally be more expensive (and can’t always be found) than buying linen cloth, making brown linen robes, and then disenchanting those robes. One Brown Linen Robe can be disenchanted into 120 Strange Dust and 40 Lesser Magic Essence.

Then you could sell the Strange Dust on the Auction House yourself.
