Professions

Your character can also have up to 2 primary professions. To learn a profession, you must find a trainer somewhere in the Warcraft universe. The trainers of some professions are easier to find than others.

Primary Professions

These are known as gathering professions:

Herbalism
the skill of harvesting herbs from dead mobs or the ground

Mining
collecting ore and jewels from veins in the earth You need a Mining Pick.

Skinning
Getting hides and scales from certain dead animals. You need a Skinning Knife.

There are know as production professions:

Alchemy
Creating various potions.

Blacksmithing
Create things made of metal such as armor, keys, and weapons

Enchanting
Using special ingredients to augment weapons and armor. Requires more work than the other professions.

Engineering
Creating items to be used by other engineers, made out of metal and stones. Example items: bullets, guns, mechanical dragons.

Leatherworking
Using skins and hide to create mail armor and leather.

Tailoring
Creating cloth items such as shirts and bags.

Jewelcrafting
Using gems to create jewelry

Inscription Increasing the ability and spells of other characters. New with the 3.02 patch Echoes of Doom.

Secondary Skills

In addition to your primary professions, you can have as many secondary skills as you like. These consist of

Cooking
Creating dishes to regenerate players.

First Aid
Healing others of wounds and poison.

Fishing
Getting a pole and casting your line into water to catch fish or other objects than can only be found from fishing.

Leveling Up

When you gain experience, you increase your level. This is known as leveling up. You can do by killing monsters, exploring the world, or questing (completing a predefined task.)

When you first start out, the quickest way to level up is through questing.

Questing

Certain characters are ‘quest givers’ if they have a yellow exclamation mark over their heads. They will give you the quest, and when you complete it, you normally go back to that same character, now a “quest ender” for your reward (the exclamation mark will have been replaced by a question mark.) Most quests can be done solo but some require a group. You must then find others in the game to form a group with.

PvP vs. PvE

When you first start out, you interact with the game (for example, fulfilling quests). This is known as PvE play, or Player vs. Environment. Another aspect is PvP or Player vs. Player. That’s when you can battle with other players from the other faction, or even from your own faction (known as dueling.)

Those are just some of the basics, at least enough to get you started playing World of Warcraft.

Take advantage of the many WoW forums out there, but be sure to read the posts from other beginners first because your question may have already been answered.
