Tip: Keep in mind that you can often buy an item, break it down, and sell the resulting pieces for more. Here are a couple of examples:
  • If you have the enchanting profession, are the reagents which result from disenchanting an item worth more than the enchanted item is selling for? If so, buy it, disenchant it, and sell the reagents for a nice profit.

  • Are people paying more proprotionally for a small stack of something than for a big stack? I know when I go to the supermarket, I’d rather pay a higher per-unit price for a small bottle of something than get a ‘better deal’ for a big bottle that I don’t really need. The same is true in the WoW world. Sometimes you can buy a big stack of something, break it down, and turn around and sell the smaller stacks for a profit.

  • Can you buy an Eternal element, break it down, and sell the resulting Crystalized elements for a profit?

Buy the Gold with Real Money

No World of Warcraft gold guide would be complete without just mentioning this method briefly. It’s hard to believe there are actually websites out there that will ’sell you’ WoW gold for real money, but there are. You tell them your realm and then pay them around $10 for 1,000 gold. Does the gold just magically show up in your account? No. They have their own characters in the realm that will mail you your gold.

This is the worst way to get money because:
  • If Blizzard catches you, they will cancel your account, no questions asked. And believe me, they constantly monitor these things within the game.
  • Ask yourself, where do these companies get the gold in the first place? Do you really think they have people on staff playing the game all day to get gold? Nope. They usually hack someone’s account to get it. So by buying their gold, you are getting rich on someone’s else’s misfortune.
  • Players who buy gold like this often get hacked themselves by these companies. Want to log in one day and find all your gold gone? It has happened to others.
  • The gold-selling websites often have viruses and trojans themselves.
  • It screws up the game economy.
Here’s Blizzard Entertainment’s official policy on buying gold.
