Here is a brief rundown for those new to the game.
WoW History
The maker of World of Warcraft is Blizzard Entertainment. They originally released the first game in the series in 1994, World of Warcraft: Humans and Orcs. Following the success of this game, the next year they came out with Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness.
There was a rather long gap of time before the third in the series was released in 2002: Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos. The Warcraft series had been steadily gaining followers during this period. And then in 2004 they released the enormously popular World of Warcraft, which is set in the world of Azewroth, a world we first saw in Warcraft I.
Since that time, Blizzard has continued to make improvements. The original game has a level cap of 60, but then in 2007 they released an expansion called The Burning Crusade which boosted the level cap to 70. It also added new quests, zones, cities, classes (Blood Elves for Horde & Draenei for Alliance) a profession (jewelcrafting), and the new continent of Outland.
But a game is nothing without the ability to change and grow. A year later in 2008 they came out with another expansion pack, The Wrath of the Lich King. The level cap was raised to 80. In addition to new quests and professions (inscription), it introduced the Death Knight, the first hero class. It also contained the new achievement system which recognizes when the player achieves certain goals (can be involved things like world exploration or something humorous like getting a shave and haircut.)
The Mechanics of Playing WoW
You install WoW software on your PC which you purchase, then you pay a monthly membership fee to be able to log in on the World of Warcraft site and play interactively with the other subscribers. Whe Blizzard comes out with a new expansion, you can either pay for the download and take advantage of the new features, or you can choose to stay with with world as you know it and not install the expansion.
The vastness of the Warcraft universe, the social aspect of teaming up with other players to accomplish quests, and the continued support and expansion by Blizzard Entertainment make World of Warcraft one of the best MMORPG games of all time.
